Written, Directed, & Starring
Brian McGuire

"Elizabeth & Mexican Boy" starts as a documentary, with filmmaker Brian McGuire turning the lens on himself, only for the lines between reality and fiction to blur into a raw narrative.

The film dives into grief, family ties, and personal transformation with unflinching emotion. After a wrenching breakup and the death of his father, "Rhino," whose funeral Brian couldn’t face, the filmmaker is adrift, couch-surfing and unmoored. He takes refuge at his older brother’s Chicago home, where nightly visions of his father’s ghost force him to confront buried pain and defiance. Seeking escape, Brian throws himself into electronic music, reviving his rusty DJ skills, but a reality TV show about online couples soon captivates him, mirroring his own longing for connection.

As he wrestles with whether to visit his father’s grave, the story builds to a cathartic peak of self-reckoning and renewal. Fusing dark humor, experimental style, and deep vulnerability, "Elizabeth & Mexican Boy" is a stark, honest portrait of a man chasing inner peace. McGuire’s journey—messy, funny, and tender—makes for a striking cinematic blend of documentary roots and narrative pull.
